This course will guide students through the process of writing an essay for the “Personal Essay and Memoir” category of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards – “the nation’s longest running, most prestigious program for creative teens.” Instruction will include step-by-step guidance and skill-building in the stages of writing personal narratives, examination and analysis of exemplary model essays, and continued feedback on students’ developing essays. (Contest submission requires students to be 13+ years old by the December 7 deadline, in grades 7 through 12, and “Residing in the United States, U.S. territories or military bases, or Canada.” $10 entry fee.)
